Visibility Testing

Track how often AI assistants mention and recommend your brand.

What is Visibility Testing?

Visibility testing measures how often AI assistants mention your brand when users ask relevant questions. It helps you understand your presence in AI-powered search and recommendations.

Why Track AI Visibility?

The AI Discovery Shift

Traditional analytics tell you about website traffic, but as users increasingly rely on AI assistants:

  • Users ask ChatGPT for recommendations instead of searching
  • Perplexity provides AI-curated answers
  • Google AI Overviews summarize results
  • If you're not tracking AI visibility, you're missing a crucial part of your digital presence.

    What Visibility Testing Shows

  • Mention Rate - How often you're mentioned in AI responses
  • Sentiment - Whether mentions are positive, neutral, or negative
  • Context - What queries trigger mentions
  • Competitors - How you compare to others
  • Setting Up Visibility Testing

    Add Test Queries

Visibility tests use queries - the questions users might ask AI assistants:

  • Go to AIO Radar Dashboard → Visibility
  • Click Add Query
  • Enter a query like "best volcano tours in Costa Rica"
  • Select target AI providers
  • Save and run test
  • Suggested Queries

Add queries for common user questions:

    CategoryExample Queries
    Brand"What is [Your Company]?"
    Services"best [your service] in [location]"
    Comparisons"[service type] recommendations"
    Reviews"[company name] reviews"

    Query Best Practices

  • Use natural language (how users actually ask)
  • Include location when relevant
  • Test variations of the same question
  • Include competitor comparison queries
  • Understanding Results

    Mention Status

    Each query result shows:

    StatusMeaning
✅ MentionedYour brand appeared in the response
❌ Not MentionedYour brand wasn't included
    ⚠️ PartialIndirect or incomplete mention

    Competitor Tracking (Pro)

Pro plans include competitor visibility tracking:

    Add Competitors

  • Go to Dashboard → Competitors
  • Click Add Competitor
  • Enter competitor domain
  • Save
  • Competitor Analysis

    See how you compare:

  • Side-by-side mention rates
  • Shared query performance
  • Competitive gaps - queries where they appear but you don't
  • Competitive Insights

    The dashboard highlights:

  • At Risk - Competitor mentioned, you're not
  • Competitive - Both mentioned
  • Leading - You're mentioned, they're not
  • Improving Visibility

    Low Mention Rate

If AI assistants don't mention you:

  • Generate LLMs.txt - Helps AI discover your content
  • Optimize content - Include relevant keywords naturally
  • Build authority - Get mentioned on other sites
  • Update regularly - Fresh content signals relevance
  • Negative Sentiment

If mentions are negative or inaccurate:

  • Review source content - Fix issues on your site
  • Respond to reviews - Address negative feedback
  • Update information - Ensure accuracy across web
  • Contact support - Report factual errors to AI providers
  • Competitor Gap

    If competitors rank better:

  • Analyze their content - What are they doing differently?
  • Check their LLMs.txt - Do they have one?
  • Review schema - Is their structured data better?
  • Monitor changes - Track what impacts visibility
  • Reports

    Visibility Report

Generate detailed reports at Dashboard → Reports:

  • Weekly/monthly visibility summaries
  • Trend analysis
  • Competitor comparisons
  • Actionable recommendations
  • Export Data

    Export visibility data for analysis:

    bash
    # Export to CSV
wp aio visibility export --format=csv --output=visibility.csv

    # Export to JSON
    wp aio visibility export --format=json

    Best Practices

    Query Strategy

  • Start broad - Test general queries first
  • Get specific - Add targeted queries over time
  • Include variations - Test different phrasings
  • Update regularly - Add new queries as offerings change
  • Testing Frequency

    Business TypeRecommended Frequency
    E-commerceDaily
    Local serviceWeekly
    Content siteWeekly
    B2BBi-weekly

    Action on Results

    Don't just track - act:

  • Review results weekly
  • Identify patterns
  • Prioritize improvements
  • Measure impact
  • Troubleshooting

    Tests Not Running

    Check:

  • API credits available
  • Internet connectivity
  • Query format valid
  • Inconsistent Results

AI responses vary - this is normal. Track trends over time rather than individual results.
